2nd Quarter Language Arts Goals

Reading:

  • To describe events in a story using illustration and details.
  • To ask and answer questions using details from the story and schema.
  • To reread or self-correct when reading does not make sense.
  • To tell differences between books that tell stories and books that tell information.
  • To ask and answer questions about non-fiction selections.
  • To use the heading, table of contents and/or glossaries to find facts.
  • To identify the main idea of a text.
  • To retell the details of a text.
  • To describe the key ideas using illustrations and details.
  • To identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text.

The following skills were introduced in First Quarter and will continue to be a focus in Second Quarter.

  • To describe the characters and the setting in a story.
  • To retell an important event from the beginning, middle and end of a story.
  • To identify the problem and solution in a story.

Phonics:

  • To distinguish if a word has a long vowel sound or short vowel sound.
  • To read words with the magic “e” long vowel pattern (make, gate, cane, )

Spelling:

  • To spell short vowel words with the digraphs “th” and “wh.”
  • To spell long a and long i words using a magic “e.”
  • To spell long o and long u words using a magic “e.”
  • To spell all long vowel words using a magic “e.”

The following skills were introduced in the First Quarter and will continue to be practiced in the Second Quarter.

  • To spell high frequency words.

Writing:

  • To state an opinion on a topic.
  • To provide at least two reasons to support an opinion.
  • To write on topic including a topic sentence, two/three supportive reasons and conclude with a closing sentence with teacher support.
  • To begin an opinion piece with a topic sentence, two/three supportive reasons and conclude with a closing sentence with teacher support.
  • To write interrogative sentences with question marks.
  • To write about a topic that I know about.
  • To write sentences using nouns and verbs that make sense together.
  • To write a story with a problem and a solution and explain how the character solves the problem.

The following skills were introduced in the First Quarter and will continue to be practiced in the Second Quarter.

  • To edit mistakes in writing with the help of a teacher.
  • To use periods at the end of declarative sentences.

Grammar:

  • To use conjuctions to connect thoughts. (and, because)
  • To identify the root word in a word that has an inflected ending. (-ed, -ing, -s)
  • To read simple words with inflectional endings.
  • To use past, present, and future tense verbs.

Second Quarter Report Card Skills for Language Arts

Guided Reading Level:  E               

Number of High Frequency Words: 64 (in a three second count)

Fluency Score:  30+    (Words read per minute.)

 

2nd Quarter Math Goals

  • Use subtraction strategies to solve subtraction word problems and subtraction sentences
  • Solve addition and subtraction problems using a model
  • Identify and use related addition and subtraction facts
  • Choose an operation and strategy to solve an addition or subtraction word problem
  • Represent equivalent forms of a number
  • Determine if an equation is true or false
  • Add and subtract facts within 20 and demonstrate fluency for addition and subtraction within 20
  • Count by 1s to extend a counting sequence to 120
  • Count by 10s from any number
  • Use objects, pictures, and numbers to represent tens and ones
  • Group objects to show numbers to 100 as tens and ones
  • Read and write numerals to 120
