I wanted to remind you that your child will not have weekly spelling tests the way we have traditionally done. We are focusing on teaching the new patterns every two weeks and will look for the progression on their end of the quarter Spelling Inventory Assessment. Spelling will not be a grade on the report cards. As your child progresses through the stages of spelling, their lists will grow with them.
Please focus on teaching the pattern that is being taught and not on memorizing the spelling of the words.
Our groups these two weeks are focusing on the following:
Group 1: Word Families with short e. -et, eg, en. Help children understand the short e sound and changing the beginning sound.
Group 2: Digraphs- s, h and sh- Help children understand that some words begin with an s, some words begin with an h and other words begin with the digraph sh. Don’t focus on memorizing the spelling of the word but on teaching the s, h and sh sound and how that is spelled.
Group 3: Blends- sp, sk, sm- Help children understand that words can begin with an 2 consonants together that make one sound. Don’t focus on memorizing the spelling of the word but on teaching the s blends and how that is spelled.
Group 4: Short a and Long a- Help children understand that in order to have a long vowel sound, most words have a second vowel to help the first one say it’s name. In the words on this list, there is a magic e at the end of each of the long a words. Again, don’t worry about memorizing the spelling but on the way long a and short a is spelled and how it sounds in the words.
